UCLA Wants You: Apply Now to the First Star BGSA Program for Foster Youth

If you’re a foster youth looking to level up your future, we’ve got big news: UCLA is opening its doors—and its resources—just for you.


The First Star UCLA Bruin Guardian Scholars Academy (BGSA) is a free, four-year college access programdesigned specifically for high school foster youth in Los Angeles County. If you’re in 9th, 10th, or 11th grade and meet the eligibility requirements, this is your shot to gain college credit, live on a university campus, and build the skills that can launch your future.


💥 What You Get

BGSA isn’t just another summer program—it’s a full experience that sets you up for success:

2–4 weeks living on the UCLA campus

Take real academic courses for college credit

Join fun and active learning activities

Explore career paths through service learning, field trips, and cultural events

Ongoing monthly Saturday support during the school year

1-on-1 mentorship and coaching to stay on track


It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get ahead while connecting with peers and professionals who care.

 

📝 Who Can Apply?


To be eligible, you must:
  1. Be a foster youth in LA County with an open DCFS case

  2. Be in 9th–11th grade (preference given to LAUSD students)

  3. Be able to join the 2–4 week summer residential program and monthly Saturday sessions

  4. Have a minimum 2.0 GPA and 90% school attendance (exceptions can be considered)

  5. Show maturity and a willingness to grow in a college-prep setting

 

📅 Application Details

Deadline: April 16, 2025

Interview Invites: Sent by May 6, 2025

Orientation: Date TBD (mandatory for accepted students & caregivers)


After you apply, First Star and UCLA staff will carefully review your application and may invite you to a virtual interview.
